On Weddings

Tuesday, May 20th, 2003

Since I just barely finished singing Jeffrey Zeldman’s praises, and publicly pondering preordering his publication (absolutely awesome alliteration), I should also congratulate him on his upcoming wedding. I imagine I’ll be announcing something similar soon. The girl and I have been seeing each other for nearly 8 years now, so I guess it is appropriate that we should get married sometime soon.

A large part of the reason we havent, for me, is that it takes a lot of time and energy (not to mention cold hard cash) to do such a thing. Time is one of the resources that always seems to be in shortest supply for me. Another issue is that the girl’s family is in Japan and doesn’t speak English with the exception of the venerable and highly useful phrase “This is a pen” (read Zis is a pen), while my folks are in Idaho in the United States and speak less Japanese than the girl’s folks speak English.

From the girl’s point of view, I think the single largest wedding blocking factor is that she is waiting for the perfect time. I on the other hand am firmly of the view that sometime we’ll just have to do it because there will never be a perfect time. She would also like to quit her job when we get married. Unfortunately, I am in the stages of getting a new business underway, and will not be able to provide that for her in the immediate future, although I would very much like to. She may be able to quit work, but she’d still have to come to work at my company, which I think she’d find is much harder than the government job she has now.

Like I say, we’ll probably make a similar announcement sometime soon (soon is a VERY subjective word so be careful about making insinuations from it), but first let us go enjoy the sun and surf in Hawaii next week. Congratulations to Jeffrey Zeldman, and anyone else out there reading this who will soon get, or has recently gotten married. I wish you all the happiness in the world, minus the amount that the girl and I will need.

(Also I need to think of a romantic and cool way to propose to her when I do it, and all my creative energy is going into other things right now.)

Dude you are going to Hawaii, I’m sure a romantic opportunity in which to propose will appear.

Getting married is easy - living together is the tricky part and you’ve already got that bit pretty much sorted out.

Thanks, it’s a nice song I guess, but it seems really cliched to me.  Like what I would write if I was trying to write a really straightforward, cheesy, generic love song.  I must be jaded.

Man, no sooner do I ask you to let me enjoy the sun and surf in Hawaii first, than you are pushing me to propose there.  C’mon!  Let me relax will ya?  Geez!

    with fondest regards,

Why don’t you run a submissions “contest” like you have for your banner?  “How should UltraBob propose?”
