“ Drawn Like a Moth to a Flame”

Hello Everybody.

My persistent son has been nagging me to post again, promising me fame, fortune and riches if I write on a regular basis. I have wracked my brain for some clever, embarrassing childhood story from the life of that enigma we call UltraBob, and he assures me there are many more, but for the present, I’m stymied.
But I’ve been doing a bit of reading about blogs, and have decided that vague ramblings about whatever pops into my head, or a recitation of interesting moments from my day will fit the bill. May not be as fun a read, but it will get the “monkey off my back!”
We are getting a bit closer to closing on the refinance of our house. We ran into a little snag when we realized that we didn’t actually OWN the land that the house sits on free and clear. Before, when the house was classified as a mobile home, it didn’t matter. We were only financing the house, the premise being that it could be packed up and moved if need be (though it would have been quite an undertaking). Well, now it is firmly attached to the land, and as such, needs a parcel of land to call its own. Our Ag lender was accomodating, however, and upon receipt of an undated financial statement, accurate legal description, a bag full of gold, and the endentured services of my first born child, they agreed to redo our loan, releasing the required acreage to us so that we can mortgage it to the hilt with someone else. (Don’t worry, UB, just kidding about that last condition, sort of. But you may wish to stay incommunicado for awhile just in case) Of course, I NEVER would have agreed to all of this if I’d know what dastardly fate awaited my darling cats, but that’s another story….....(see previous brilliant post from UltraMom)
Of course, everything is not, nor ever will be, perfect as far as the house goes. A particulary annoying thing right now is the front door porch light. There is something wrong with the switch, and for quite a while, we had no light there at all, which could be interesting late at night when you are carrying bags of groceries up our 4 rickety steps. UltraDad, as a stopgap measure, wired the light to stay on ALL the time. It’s all or nothing around here!
The problem? MOTHS! Thousandsof them. They are there all the time, but at night its incredible. I really should take a picture before he gets the problem fixed. I should hurry. I probably only have a year or two. And once in a while at night, we need to open the door. And what do you suppose the moths do then? That’s right, they fly into the house; as many and as quickly as is mothly possible (I started to say humanly possible). Once in the house their mission is to a)hover around the light in the house, b) flutter about my face, especially at night when I’m trying to read in bed, and c) die leaving furry little moth bodies EVERYWHERE. You scientific types: why do moths do this? why are they drawn to what is going to kill them? I know there’s a lesson to be learned for all of us here, but I’m not in the mood. Toby (former indoor cat with only 3 legs) and Tree Cat (I should tell you this story some time. This cat used to live in the tree, but is now brave, since Sparky is missing, and goes about on the ground ) are fighting, and I’ve got to open the door and break up the fight…........... Or maybe they’ve got to learn to work it out on their own….......with a little help from the moths, of course.

UltraMom you are cool..  why are moths are attracted to potentially lethal light sources remains the second of life’s biggest mysteries..  (the first of course being why I date the wrong men - well that is what my mother says anyway) grin

BTW UltraBob was supposed to send me an email this week and I am yet to hear from him..  I don’t have his email so was hoping that this message would get through this way.

On the plus side, having the light on all the time should repel any cockroaches from your front porch!

See also http://www.howstuffworks.com/question675.htm for more details on the whole moth/light thing.
