UltraMom’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

I hope you enjoyed the sweet, sentimental story of UltraMom and UltraDad’s first date. Unfortunately, however, we live in the real world, not the fairyland of first dates and storybook weddings.
UDad and I have celebrated our anniversary/first dates in various ways. Several times, it coincided with our appointment with our tax consultant. A couple of years saw UltraDad crawling around under the house with heat tape and/or a hairdryer trying to unthaw frozen pipes. Let me tell you what I did on THIS particular St. Patrick’s Day…........ (anniversary of our first date in case you have forgotten already).
As you know, UDad has been working in Nevada, so, first of all, we were not together. Fortunately, Johnny had returned from Japan a couple of days earlier, but I’m getting ahead of myself. It happened a little something like this….................
Well, I had a bone density scan done in early January, and, not hearing back from the Dr., finally requested a copy for myself. And it didn’t look that great, so I asked to talk to the Dr. about it, and, of course, he was away for the week. But his nurse called me back, and she was like “the dr. wants to set up an appointment to talk to you about this”, and I was like “well, I live a long way away; can’t we just do it over the phone?” But, “Noooo. He wants to do this in person.” So FINE. I made the appt for March 17, Thurs, left work early and drove 70 miles to Idaho Falls.
And, of course, I had to wait about 72 hours, and then, when I finally got to talk to the Dr. , he was all “It really doesn’t look too bad. You were reading it wrong because the color bands on the graph didn’t show up on your black and white copy, so I think you should just keep on doing what you are doing and we can retest in another year.” So I said, “You know, we really could have done this on the phone. I left work early and drove about 500 miles.” And so he said to just remind him of that next time and we could do it over the phone, but he liked to talk to people face to face to make sure they understood what he was talking about. Like, keep on doing what you have been doing is so hard to understand? Geez!
So then I had some shopping to do and I went to the mall, cause I had this coupon from Bath and Body Works, and I only had to spend $10 to get a free Cherry Blossom lotion, and its the newest kind, so I wanted it, but I always park at the food court entrance, right? but it was all torn up with some construction or something, so I had to go in the Macy’s store, and it used to be the Bon, but it isn’t anymore, and there was a gigantic sale going on so I had to spend about $60 on some new clothes, but I saved about $200, so that was a really good deal. And then I went to the Lenscrafters store cause I wanted to try some different glasses that turned into sunglasses when you were in the sun, right? But apparently, they don’t do that if you are in the car, so I had to get some sunglasses AND some regular glasses, so I went over to Sam’s Club to get some more stuff (like the new Incredibles movie) while they were making my glasses. I was doing really good, and only spent about $90 at Sam’s Club, which is really good for me, and drove back to the Lenscrafters, but when I parked, there was, like, a lot of steam coming out of the hood of my car. So I didn’t think that was very good, and I asked the guy at Lenscrafters about it, and he didn’t think it was very good either, so I went to an Autoparts place, and the guy there didn’t think it was very good, and my antifreeze was all gone, so we put some in, but when I started the car, the engine light kept going all the way over to HOT. SO, I called Udad’s brother Chuck and he was all “You shouldn’t drive it home. You should just call Johnny and have him come get you.” So, fine, I called him, and he wasn’t happy about it, but agreed to come, so then I had about 90 minutes to wait. And I was hungry, cause I had planned to eat my chicken on the way home, but it was really cold outside, and Wendy’s was closeby so I went in there and ordered a drink and some fruit and ate my chicken and read my book, “How to be your Dog’s Best Friend.”
After a while, I noticed that this guy was putting chairs up on the tables , so I said, “Oh, you are closed.” and he said “Yes, but you can stay for awhile.” and I said, “Well, I’m just waiting for my son cause I had car trouble.” and he said “you stay as long as you want. If anyone bothers you just tell them that David said you could stay. Thanks, David.
David looked to be about 30ish, and was, apparently, very social. Several teenagers were having a discussion at the next table, and after a bit, David went over to them and contributed this to their conversation, “You shouldn’t drink too many of those power drinks, cause its just like speed and you have a hard time coming down, man.” One of the kids said, “Didn’t you used to work at McDonalds?” And David said, “Yeah, but I got fired cause I got stopped by the cops, and I had like 10 lbs of marijuana in my car, and I had to go to jail for a while.” I didn’t hear anything for a bit, but then I heard David say “How many kids do I have? Nine. Oh, you mean living? Four. And I’m hoping we get a daughter this time, cause my other daughter, well she belongs to my sister’s best friend. Cause I was just doing her a favor, cause she likes the same sex I do, if you know what I mean, and she wanted a kid.” In response to snickers from the teenagers,” No, I didn’t enjoy it. I was just doing a favor for a friend.”
Well, the kids left, and I moved to a booth so David could finish putting the chairs on top of the tables. This sparked another round of stimulating conversation. “What are you reading? A book about dogs? I had a dog once. He was a Rottweiller (sp?) named Goliath and he was my best friend, you know, David and Goliath?, but this lady lied and said he jumped over her fence and bit her, but he couldn’t have cause he was all tied up, but the cops came and shot him and it cost me $275, and I said, why didn’t you just let me take him out in the desert and shoot him myself, cause it wouldn’t have cost me $275 and at least that way I would have known, you know?” Well, about then, I decided that I could just wait in my car, so I left.
And about half an hour later, before I was completely frozen, Johnny showed up. And we put all my stuff in his car, but he was still really tired, so he wanted me to drive. But his car seat is kind of stupid and it doesn’t like to go forward very much, so I had to stuff both of our coats behind my back so I could reach all the pedals, which seemed like kind of an important thing.
When we got home, Johnny grabbed his coat, but when I put mine on, I found out that I had his coat and he had mine, but he looked so silly wearing my coat that it cheered me up, so it didn’t seem so bad after all.
And the next day, Chuck and Johnny went back in and got my car to an auto repair shop and they replaced a heater core hose, and my car has been working great ever since.
So that was my day. Top THAT if you can.

A Cute Sentimental Story

St. Patrick’s Day. March 17, 1973. UltraMom and UltraDad’s first date. I can hear you “oohing and aahing” already. Isn’t that sweet? Yes, yes it is. We seem to have a penchant for marking events in our lives with major holidays. After all, our wedding anniversary is Feb 2 on Groundhog’s Day. It all happened a little something like this…..........

Set the scene: I was in my first year of college at Idaho State University in Pocatello, about 50 miles from where my family lived in Idaho Falls. UltraDad was newly discharged from the Army, and had , with his brother Chuck, bought a dairy farm in Howe, Idaho. His parents had recently retired, also to Howe. I had become good friends with UDad’s sister, also called Kathy, and we went to each other’s houses sometimes on weekends. Her family was really nice, especially her brother, John. My own brothers tended to, at best, ignore me, but John was different. He was very considerate to his little sister, and even more so to her friend. He went out of his way to spend time with us, playing games, saddling horses and taking us fishing and on picnics. He volunteered to drive us back to college or pick us up from (neither of us had a car). I wished he were my brother…........

The invitation: I was intrigued to open my mailbox one day and find a card addressed to me in the neatest printing I had ever seen. The return address was Howe, ID, and it was a cute, funny card from my friend’s brother. I can’t remember exactly what the card said now, but I’m sure I still have it around here somewhere. But the gist of it was that he was asking me if I would go out with him. At first I was totally taken aback, and it took a while to adjust my thinking from “cool brother” to “possible date.” I tried to discuss it with Kathy, but she just shrugged and said “If you want to go, go.” I did, so I did.

The date: John picked me up at my parent’s house in Idaho Falls on the evening of March 17. As befitting the date I dressed entirely in …....purple! Actually, I guess I didn’t think about it, and in case you’re wondering, there were no pinching consequences. John was far too considerate (and shy and nervous) to attempt such a thing. Besides, I don’t think he wore green either, but I don’t really remember. I had on a lavendar long-sleeved shirt with a darker lavendar jumper, and my hip-length honey-blond hair was tied back with a purple ribbon. My parents inquired as to our plans, and John said he thought perhaps dinner and a movie. My mother helpfully asked if I hadn’t mentioned that I would like to see the Alice in Wonderland movie then playing. Well, I HAD mentioned it, and I DID want to see it, but I was still totally mortified, and denied it vehemently. We ended up seeing the romantic comedy “Jeremiah Johnson”. For those of you who are from another planet and have never seen that Robert Redford movie, I was making a little jest. It is actually a mountain-man drama with lots of killing and revenge, a far cry from Alice in Wonderland, but I enjoyed it all the same. For dinner, we went to the gourmet restaurant of McDonald’s for their Big Macs and fries. I’m not sure why. Maybe it was my idea, or maybe John wanted to go to a restaurant that shared his last name? Anyway, I had a little problem with the straw dispenser, and spilled straws all over the floor.

The aftermath: I don’t know. That was a long time ago. I guess we must have had a very good time, because we continued to go out. And he continued to give us rides to and from college, and took me on wonderful fishing trips and hikes, sometimes with and sometimes without the sister. I remember one time when he drove his sister back, and I had stayed at school for the weekend. He took us out to Shakey’s for pizza. I was starving, cause I hadn’t eaten much that weekend. My campus meal ticket was only good for weekdays, and I was fairly thrifty, so I tended to eat as little as possible when I was there for the weekend. Consequently, when that pizza came, I dug right in. John hardly ate any, but was completely enthralled with the old-time black and white flicks they were showing; old “3 Stooges, Little Rascals, Larel and Hardy”, that sort of thing. I’m not sure I had ever heard him laugh so much. Me? I was too busy eating. I learned later that he really didn’t even like pizza.

The after-aftermath: So, on Groudhog’s Day this year, we had been married for 31 years. I still haven’t seen Alice in Wonderland.

Sentimentally yours,

UltraMom

How to backup DVDs on Mac Os X

Note: I can see that a lot of people have been looking at this page, but without feedback, it is hard to know if the information here is useful or not. Please comment and let me know whether this answers whatever questions you might have had. If it was hard to understand or didn’t cover the questions you had, let me know that. Your feedback, will help me to make this a better resource.

I have recently been spending what little free time I have between work and Grand Theft Auto San Andreas backing up our dvd collection after the unfortunate experience of one of our dvds getting too scratched to play smoothly all the way through. (I was lucky, doing a backup of the disk left me with a copy that works much better than the original)

Anyway, since it took me quite a bit of time and trial and error to find the perfect setup for me, I thought I would share my findings with you.

Without further ado, here is my method for backing up dvds in Mac Os X, please feel free to comment, and let me know if you have a better way.

1) Ripping the DVD to hard disk.

The first issue I encounter in backing up my DVDs is that I have both region 1 and region 2 DVDs. I live in Japan, but like to order DVDs from the United States from time to time, and Christmas just wouldn’t be Christmas without Johnny and Jimmy’s annual Simpsons Season box.

The DVD-r drive that comes with my G5 does not have unlimited region switching firmware available for it that can be flashed from the Mac. It would be possible to pull out the drive, mount it in a Windows machine, flash it, and put it back in the mac, but I don’t currently have a desktop windows machine (laptop only) and besides I like to keep my mac hardware away from the shadier elements wink.

That leaves me to figure out how to backup multiple region DVDs on a single region drive. Ideally I would like the backup to be region free, so that I don’t have to worry about what player I put it in. Fortunately MacTheRipper is the perfect application for the job, and better yet it’s freeware! I did have to go through a few steps to get it working nicely for me, so I’ll go into them here:

  1. Open System Preferences (apple menu->System Preferences… is one way)
  2. click on the CDs & DVDs icon
  3. Set “When you insert a video DVD:” to Ignore and while you are at it, set “When you insert a blank DVD:” to Ignore as well.
  4. close System preferences
  5. Go into the MactheRipper preferences and make sure that it is set to not remember save location
  6. When you run mac the ripper and it completes it’s disk scan, look at the DISC RCE indicator in the bottom left of the imitation LCD display. If it says detected you will need to set the RCE Region to the region that the disc is. This can usually be found on the back of the DVD jacket if you don’t know it.
  7. Finally, check that the New Region setting is set to ALL. This is what will make your ripped version of the disk region free.

One thing to note, MactheRipper doesn’t have very good visual feedback that things are happening, so until you get used to how everything works, it can seem like it is frozen. Give it a few minutes, as it takes a while to do things like scan disks.

UPDATE: MactheRipper has been having some stability problems for me, and seems to only really work well long enough for me to burn a couple of dvds per login. I had been using a program called DVDBackup to do this job before, but it needed DVD Player to unlock the disk before it could decrypt it. I’m not sure yet, and this update may disappear very soon if I find out I’m wrong, but it SEEMS like if you scan the DVD in MactheRipper first, then DVDBackup will back it up with no problem.

2) Resizing the video files to fit on a DVD-R

Often the files that result from a direct rip from DVD will be about two times too large to fit on a DVD-R. DVD2oneX will do a nice job of resizing them for you. DVD2oneX seems a bit expensive to me at 49.99 Euros, so I would really like to find a different method of doing this, but haven’t yet. If you know of one, please comment and let me know what it is.

In DVD2oneX, select the source directory (this would be the video_ts folder created in whatever folder you told mactheripper to rip to), slect the audio/subtitle tracks that you want to include (I always include them all, cause who knows when I might want to watch the Simpsons in French), select the output size (there is an option for DVD-R that is supposed to size it to fit on a DVD-R disk, but when I was using toast to burn the disks, I had problems with them not fitting so I have mine set to a User defined value of 4300 MB), set Copy to Disk Copy, set Ratio to Variable (I guess. it seem to work well for me, but I’ve not experimented or bothered to read the manual), and click Start. It will then prompt you for where you want to save the end result. I usually create a folder called small in the same directory as the source files, and copy it there. That makes it easier to remember where everything is, and make sure all that disk space gets cleared back up. DVD2oneX will then scan the files, and then start reducing them to the selected size.

3) Creating a disk image to burn to DVD-R

If you have Roxio Toast, you should be able to get by without this step, but I found that I had a lot higher success rate burning from a .img file. DVD2oneX has a Create Image option, but it causes the program to die a nasty death for me, your results may vary.

I use DVD Imager, a brilliant piece of freeware, to creater .iso files from my newly shrunk video_ts folder. Here’s the steps I follow:

  1. open my small directory in the finder
  2. run DVD Imager
  3. drag the video_ts folder inside the small folder into the DVD Imager application window
  4. make sure Prompt for new destination is selected
  5. click Create Image
  6. select a location for saving the image
  7. type in a name for my disk image (something like SIMSPONS_5_1) and away we go

Sidenote: Tod says, “You need dvdimager because dvd video has a special format. The table of contents has to be specially constructed so that certain files appear at certain fixed sector positions.” You should listen to Tod, he’s a very smart guy.

4) Burning your disk image to DVD-R

I use the Disk Utility included with Mac OS X to burn the image to DVD-R. Here are the steps I follow:

  1. Open Disk Utility (Applications Folder->Utilities->Disk Utility
  2. Insert a blank DVD-R into the drive
  3. Click Burn in Disk Utility
  4. Select the image to burn
  5. burn it

5) Test the DVD

This step is easy, just stick the DVD in any DVD Player that can handle DVD-Rs (most of them that I have encountered) and see if it’ll play. It should be region free so it shouldn’t matter what region your DVD player is equipped to play.

I hope this was helpful. If you have any questions, comments, or additions please comment and I’ll update as necessary.

Mom for a Day (or two)

I just had a very eventful week. First of all, my hardworking husband had a few days off and was able to come home for a bit. And secondly, I got to play substitute Mom for a few evenings. My great friend, Debbie and her husband, Tom recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary, and scheduled a short cruise to commemorate the occasion. So, I got to have their children Nathan, Rachel and Amy spend four nights at my house.
In addition to being one of the best friends I have ever had, Debbie is also my WeightWatcher co-leader and the wife of the pastor of my church. In addition to being my stand-in kids for a few days, Rachel and Amy (often driven by big brother Nathan) are Murphy’s substitute care-takers. So it is a very symbiotic relationship.
Most people that know me at all know this very basic fact: I LOVE to play games! When in the company of equally eager players, I am in game-playing heaven. I think I have FINALLY gotten my kids trained in that area, at least somewhat. Over Christmas break, when I got home from work, Johnny and Jim played games with me every night, without me even begging, threatening or blackmailing. Nathan, Rachel and Amy are gold-star gameplayers, having already been well-trained, so I think we all had a pretty good time.
So, where do I begin? Well, we began with Bob’s game Chronology, so that seems a good place to start, and I’m telling you, those kids gave me a run for my money! Not that we played for money. Its just an expression. Johnny, I promise I’ll win your Calvin and Hobbes books back someday. Just kidding.
What game playing series would be complete without a rip-roaring game of Cranium? Amy and I were an awesome team, as were Nathan and Rachel and it seems like that game ended in a tie. Due to my artistic talents (or lack thereof), Amy was the drawer and clay modeler of choice.
We had to call Jim to get the rules for the dice game I love so much. Fortunately he answered his phone (a rare occurence) and was able to elucidate. Nathan was the most impressive dice roller, if memory serves.
One night we hauled out Johnny’s elite poker chips for an old-fashioned game of Texas-HoldEm poker and I think Rachel ended up with the pot. Of chips, that is. But I think my favorite was the game of Tabloid Teasers. A la balderdash, players make up make-believe tabloid headlines, and you get to move ahead for either guessing the headline that actually was in a tabloid (I started to say the “correct” one, but that makes it sound like the tabloid was actually true), or for having other people choose the one you made up. My co-players were very imaginative, especially Amy, but with her trademark creativity and intuition, UltraMom won the day, and the game. I also took the time to introduce them to Bookworm, which quickly became addictive. Boy, do I understand that one!
Each night, I would suddenly realize it was 11 pm and that I had to work the next day. Some other people who shall remain nameless, are home-schooled and didn’t have to get up early and thus were less affected by the late nights.
Murphy was also in heaven. So many to pet him, tell him how cute he was and play with him. Every morning, the first thing he wanted was access to the rooms with the shut doors where “our kids” were sleeping. I guess Jim’s room (where the girls were staying) doesn’t have a tightly shutting door. Murphy soon found that if he was persistent in scratching, that the door would come open, and he was in!

UltraDad had to go to town to get a new washing machine one day. (the old one, very conveniently, broke the second day he was home). He came home with a huge tub of KFC Chicken and lots of sides (fries, cole slaw, baked beans, etc.), which we really enjoyed, especially the not-cooking dinner part. What a guy.
Now Murphy and I are alone again. Oh well, maybe we can catch up on a little sleep. And now, with Johnny coming home soon, I at least have a “kid in the house” to look forward to. And there’s always the hope that Tom & Debbie may go on another cruise someday…...................................

The cute dog blanket in the background was made by Debbie, Rachel and Amy, and was given to UltraMom as a gift. In addition to being absolutely adorable, it is warm and fleecy. There are a lot of different breeds of dogs represented, including, of course, an apricot poodle.

The Battle of the Pets

I was having a little chat with my brother tonight…......shall we say UltraDan? He and his lovely wife, Mary live way across the country in the Garden State. I am referring, of course, to New Jersey. They have a darling little cockatiel who goes by the name of Sebastian. Naturally, in the course of our conversation, I just happened to mention my precocious new poodle child, Murphy, and a….um…shall we say “friendly competion” developed. Which is better, a bird or a dog?
I’d like to throw down the gauntlet here, on this very public, very widely-read(?) website. No doubt you can tell from recent photos that Murphy is an extemely handsome, intelligent and personable young fellow.
Recently I purchased a bell for him; you know, the kind you might find at a hotel desk to ring for service? The idea was to train him to ding the bell if he had the need to go outdoors to visit the, uh, “powder room”. UltraHeather had a friend whose little Yorkshire Terrior was so trained. The first night, I put Murphy’s little paw on the bell, rang it and let him out. One more time, and he was off and running. “Ding, I need to go potty.” “Ding, I want to chase the cats” “Ding, I want to eat the cat’s food.” “Ding, I want to go out because you always give me a treat when I come back in.” The last one finally occured to me after he had been in and out about 12 times a few nights ago.
Does Sebastian do that?

I had some clean, warm blankets in the laundrey basket, and guess who jumped right in and made himself at home? Does Sebastian do that?

Bring it on, BirdMan!
