GMail is one of the best done web applications I have ever come across, but I am not convinced that I trust them with the privacy issues. I do have a GMail account that I don’t use for anything important however, and now my desirted username is protected. At any rate, I currently have 4 GMail invitations to give away first come first serve.
Everyone I have asked that told me they wanted one has been invited so know I’d like to pass on my GMail invites to any readers who want them. If you’d like one, please leave a comment, and I’ll send you an invite. If I have more people that want them, than I have invites, then I can still invite you: you’ll just have to wait until I get another round of invitations to pass out.
I’ve decided to donate all my gmail invites from now on to this site where you can easily get an invite for yourself. If they don’t have any invites when you visit try again a little later. The usually get some more pretty quickly. If you have a website, here is another easy way to get one. If these sites don’t have g-mail invites, I can’t help you.

At the blatant and unwavering abuses of this administration, by which I mean (in this case) the Justice (amazing how quickly this has become such an extremely ironic name since Bush took office) Department headed by John Ashcroft.
“The Justice Department tipped its hand in its ongoing legal war with the ACLU over the Patriot Act. Because the matter is so sensitive, the Justice Dept is allowed to black out those passages in the ACLU’s court filings that it feels should not be publicly released.Ostensibly, they would use their powers of censorship only to remove material that truly could jeopardize US operations. But in reality, what did they do? They blacked out a quotation from a Supreme Court decision”
Thanks to Kuri for the link.
I was just watching CNN, and there was a debate about the effects of the debunked, slanderous swift boat ads. They were discussing how these ads have had effects on the polls, and have turned a certain percentage of people against Kerry. It just floors me that the main topic isn’t that these ads are completely dishonest and slanderous. For CNN it isn’t about making sure that people know that the information is untrue.
Instead it is all about what effect these lies have had. It is insane to me that it doesn’t matter how something gets done, as long as it gets done. It doesn’t matter how you lie to the American people as long as you manipulate them into following your point of view. This isn’t the America that I grew up with, and I am completely disgusted.
I’m no expert on wine, in fact I probably don’t drink more than 2 bottles in a month when I am drinking a lot. That being said, I think this review is a safe one. Last weekend I went out an bought a couple of bottles of wine to enjoy with dinner once in a while. I bought one bottle of Jacob’s Creek wine that I know to be quite decent, and decided to get one that I hadn’t tried before. Since I don’t consider my palate to be refined enough to purchase expensive wines I generally stay in the low end of the price scale. I spent slightly more for the second bottle, a 1999 Woodbridge merlot from Robert Mondavi, than for the bottle of Jacob’s Creek.
Do not drink this wine and do not give it to others. This wine is simply disgusting, and the only way to make it bearable is to chill it as cold as you can. It leaves you with a dry stagnant flavor after you drink it, and the taste while you are drinking it is worse. The only bottle of wine I’ve had that was worse than this one was a bottle of warm Mad Dog 20/20 Blue Hawaii when I was a drunken college student. I highly recommend that you pass this one by.
Ah the dangers of low-priced wine. Usually you are pretty safe if you stick with the Aussie stuff, but there are some real humdingers out there. Cheaper wines from Chile are generally OK too.
Never no matter how desparate for vino you are - I repeat never - feel tempted to try any of the low priced Japnese wines. Buy some turpentine and chuck colouring and sugar in it instead. It’d be healthier for you.
Since UltraMom is derelict in her posting duties, I guess it is up to me to hold down the fort for one more day.
I remember that I used to love to listen to my Grandpa’s stories of when he was young. What life was like then: the characters that lived then, in as yet untamed, Idaho; his misadventures; the stories of his Father coming to America by way of 7 trips around the world; and his pet bat, Useless. Many of the stories were well-worn yarns that I had heard many times and wanted to hear many more, and frequently the right question would launch him into telling a tale I’d never heard before. The men in my family are known for spinning tall tales, and I’m sure that Grandpa’s stories were embellished, but really, what story isn’t better with a bit of embellishment?
My Grandpa died of cancer when I was a Freshman away at college, and I have missed him everyday since then. I have missed all the things I could have shared with him: he never met UltraGirl and I never got to tell him of my time in Japan or starting my new business. I miss all the time we could have spent together and we never got to go up to Alaska, catch some Squaws, and be hermit heroes (my Grandpa was many things, politically correct was not among them). I can’t work with him in his shop on whatever project he has going on, and I can’t listen to his wonderful stories of old.
Stories like these give us, I think, a lot of insight into life today. Maybe not in directly applicable ways all the time, but that extra knowledge gives us extra tools to deal with life. Besides that they are nearly always incredibly interesting. I bring this up because recently I have been blessed with the opportunity to hear more of these stories of the past, but this time from a completely different background. UltraGirl’s grandfather died the week before last, and her Grandmother has come to live with UltraGirl’s parents. Before the Grandfather died, they were one of 4 married couples in Yokosuka over the age of 90. UltraGrandma is 94 years old and is extremely spry. She was born in the last years of the reign of the Meiji Emperor (born in 1910), and has lived through tremendous changes in Japan. I love to hear her stories and have tons of questions, and she loves to tell them. We make a great team. I’m extremely lucky to have met UltraGrandma and I feel extremely blessed to be able to hear her stories. I hope to get some of her stories on tape … something I have always regretted not doing with Grandpa.
If you still have living grandparents, appreciate them, they are truly a treasure!
Great Post. I’d love to hear some of the Japanese Grandmother stories. I remember some of the Grandpa (on UDad’s side) stories, some truer than others. I’m sorry you didn’t get to know better Grandpa on UltraMom’s side; he was truly a great man, and , of course, was named after you..........or maybe the other way around!
I spent nearly all of last week awake, trying to meet a hellish deadline. I met most of the deadline and got a minor extension on the part that I had only gotten the content for a day earlier.
The thing about sleep dep is it makes everything kind of interesting. My state of awareness goes through peaks and troughs. When I break through a barrier of exhaustion I feel alert and ready to go for a few hours. I feel at the top of my game, and though I’m probably not doing my best work, I feel like I am. I find that I focus the best during periods like these.
Then there are the troughs, where I drift in and out of a state of half-sleep and find myself doing “interesting” things that I hope I catch everytime. Like when I think I am plugging away, copying and pasting text into a French web page making good progress, and suddenly I’m brought to a halt when I find that I don’t really know where to take this bizarre interview with some unknown creature that I realize I have been typing into the middle of the page for what, judging by the length, must have been at least a couple of minutes…
I wish I hadn’t deleted the interview in rage and disgust, I think the mystery creature had some very interesting things to say, but I can’t remember what they were.
You’re becoming delirious. Get some sleep boy!
Funny! I have experienced many of those sensations. Do you remember when I used to read to you guys at night? Sometimes I would be so exhausted that just the act of sitting still for a few minutes would make me drowsy. I would be rudely awakened by one of my children shaking me because I was no longer reading the words that were printed in the book, but others of my own invention. That may sound exciting, but though I think I was usually saying real words, I don’t think they necessarily belonged together in the sequence I was putting them in.
And don’t even get me started about Dad’s “sleep-talking!” Maybe fodder for a future post!
Hope you’re feeling more rested now. I was just reading an article on the negative affects of sleep deprivation, but I don’t remember making up phantom interviews as being one of them!
I am seeing a trend here; I got bored telling about my vacation from last Spring, and never finished. I started a detailed account of UltraBob’s visit, and didn’t finish that. Perhaps I have a very short attention span. Come to think of it, no “probably” about it. Anyway, I’m trying to turn over a new leaf (a very tiny one) and finish something. So….....the rest of UltraBob’s visit (at least until I get bored again)
Refer back a couple of posts to “A LIttle Bit of Saturday”
To recap the last exciting post, UltraDad, UltraBob and I were in Pocatello, and they had just picked me up after my WeightWatcher training. We then traveled to the mall to look at the cell phones that the boys had been scoping out. They were impressed with the saleswoman at a particular store. She seemed very knowledgeable. Unfortunately, just as we arrived and selected our phones, she went off duty and we got Miss Flirty/SpaceCadet. It seemed to me that she was so busy telling us about the books she had read, her lack of interest in having children and engaging UBob in witty conversation that she could hardly bring herself to tackle the problem of giving us our phone contracts and correctly programming the phones. It took about 2 hours I think. I really don’t think I am exaggerating. And we later discovered that she had programmed them incorrectly, but that’s another story for perhaps another day.
Free at last, we scooted over to Heather’s house where we found her and Heath in a bit of a pickle. They have three cats; Callie, Nimbus and Rocky. Rocky, the new boy, tho neutered, had been staking a claim on the area underneath the computer and stereo in their house. Heath was knee deep in the project of cleaning up, a tangle of electronic cords and cleaning supplies spread before him, so we had to go to dinner without him. Now, Heath loves the cats as much as Heather does, but he tentatively asked us if we thought Rocky might like to live outside on the farm! We had to tell him that a city boy like Rocky probably wouldn’t make it with toughs like “Tree Cat” on the loose. When we returned to their house after dinner, we had a very nice time sitting on their porch and just visiting. Heath claimed that he didn’t mind missing dinner out and had, in fact, already eaten. I think Heather needs to hang on to that boy. The drive home was in the dark, but on the whole, a very nice day.
Sunday was actually the big day; my 50th Birthday. UltraBob and I took a very nice bike ride. I let him ride mine, and I borrowed the sister-in-law’s that had been left at my house. She is rather short, so its a kid-sized bike. Still, I did better than I thought I would! Then Ultra went to church with me, which was wonderful. Everyone was so glad to see him and so happy to hear about my terrific surprise!
Heather and Heath drove out mid afternoon, and we were all invited to Uncle Bill and Aunt Patty’s for an early dinner. They grilled Salmon; it was delicious. It was so nice not to have to worry about food and clean-up. When we got back to our house, Johnny had arrived to begin his days off work. We kind of goofed around outside throwing some cheesy little plastic boomerangs until Johnny found his real one, and I got out the frisbee. Then Johnny had an idea for a really fun “party game”! He had played it with some of the guys at his fire station. He had a football; not really a nerf, but kind of like one. The rules were as follows; everyone stands in a circle and the football is thrown to the person of your choice. You can throw with only one hand, and catch with only one hand. If you flub up, you are out.
It was a blast! The star player was Heath. He is quite coordinated. The funniest was Heather. Very soon, Heather and I started getting second and third chances, or we would always been out right away. We played that til it was too dark to see any more. Then, inside for a little CRANIUM! UltaMom was in game-playing heaven! We also enjoyed the game Bob had brought with him: Chronology. He was surprisingly bad at the game, and ended up leaving it here to make room in the suitcase for more alluring booty for the return trip to Japan.
All too soon, it was Monday and time to return to the real world. And it was all too soon, cause I don’t think I made it to bed before 2 AM. I had to go back to work, and UltraBob to Boise to catch a plane. I was glad that he stopped at my bank on his way thru so I could introduce him to everyone in sight.
Well, I did it. I finished the whole thing. Maybe I’ll yet tackle the end of that 6 month old vacation tale!
Love you Ultra, Honey. Thanks again for a memorable 4 days.
UltraMom
Sounds like you had a wonderful birthday. I’m glad you finished the story. I’ve played Chronology with UB and he is bad at it, indeed. But so was I, so I’m glad you have it now.
I Loved that you came and surprised your Ultra Mom for her birthday. It will be the best thing you could have done to make it a perfect week and special day. I am so proud of all involved to make it a great surprise. Good story Ultra sister. Love ultraubi
UltraUbi,
Perfect name for you on this site! I’ve been pondering what to use for quite a while. Both UltraSister and UltraAunt were too unspecific!
We had a great time while I was out. I just wish I would have had time to stop by and see you. Next time I’m out I’ll definitely visit, and I’ll bring along UltraGirl ‘cause let’s face it: when people see me out there they say, “Oh hi, where is UltraGirl?” Mom was searching the house for her, and then was all depressed that I was neither UltraGirl or UltraSister.
for the record we used an actual regulation sized football in the game. “nerf” my eye!
Arnoud was a friend of Olivier, and got his invite from Olivier, so there is still one more invite left. First come, first serve!
Thanks for offering your invites to the world. I would like one please.
thanks.
Sorry I couldn’t make it to the last blogger’s meeting. I was back home visiting my family. If possible, I’d like one please.
Thanks
