Hang on to your hats! You lucky people will soon be able to read many nonsensical pages worth of new vacation ramblings. That’s right; UltraMom is going to the Oregon Coast! It wasn’t easy to arrive (mentally) at this “destination”, though I hope the physical arriving goes without a hitch. We started out with a week in late March that corresponded to Spring Break at Boise State U, and the stipulation (UltraDad) that we were NOT going to Vegas yet again. Johnny mentioned his caveat that the vacation not include a tour of the Route 66 Museum and that we go nowhere near the Hoover Dam. Jim just wants to do outdoors stuff and would like it if we could camp, hike and fish the whole time. So, since we were all on the same page, as it were, UltraMom made the decison, and now it is up to everyone else to get excited about it and help with the planning.
It seems that most everyone (but me) has been to the Oregon Coast before. I have a Frommer’s Oregon guide book borrowed from one friend, a map of Oregon and brochures of Newport from another, and a copy of Oregon Coast magazine and the loan of a waterproof sweatshirt from yet another. Also, we have about 5 opinions about the best way to go and the best things to see.
Johnny mentioned that he would love to see a Broadway production, so a little “surfing” found “The Starlight Express” playing in Portland in our time frame. Yeah, I’d never heard of it either, but the music is by Andrew Lloyd Weber, and its about trains, so it’s gotta be good, right? Anyway, tickets have been purchased, so that’s that.
Jim found us a fishing charter so he could fulfill his heart’s desire of fishing in the ocean. UltraMom booked the trip for the guys, but is still a little undecided about “taking the plunge” herself, as she gets a little dizzy swinging on a swingset, and still has a headache tonight from tipping backwards too far on her big exercise ball. Unless we load up on the dramamine…............
UltraMom’s picks are the big Aquarium at Newport and the Portland Zoo, while UltraDad wants to visit the WoodMizer sawmill factory where he bought his own portable Woodmizer many, many years ago.
So, sounds like fun for the whole family right? Well, not quite, since the UltraHeather and UB won’t be along. And it could be raining the whole time and pretty cold and windy. It is after all, only March.
But for a week, we will have a change of scenery and try to leave our problems behind (though i have a feeling they will still be lurking about when we return) and try to make some memories.
In the meantime, the planning and anticipation is fun, and any tips from you Oregon Coast Vacation Veterans are gratefully accepted.

I can recommend:
- POWELL’s bookstore. Absolutely the best bookstore ever.
- 24 hour Church of Elvis. It’s a campy, kitchy art installation with an Elvis and religious theme.
- Tillamook Cheese factory outside Portland offers tours and has a cheese shop. Good place to stop if you’re driving north on 101.
Portland is full of quirky little clubs and arty things, so don’t be afraid to just jump in and see what’s happening.
I had no idea, Kristen was so kuwashii (possessing detailed knowledge) on Portland, but I most definitely second her recommendation of Powells. The rest of the places I know and recommend in Portland are collectives and thinks and are related either to punk rock or political activism and usually both so I’ll refrain from telling you about them since you wouldn’t like them.
On second read, I’d have to disagreee that Powells is the best bookstore ever, though the selection and prices rock my freakin’ socks off. I have to go with (I think it was) Good Day Books in Seattle for best bookstore ever.
As a vastly experienced Oregon vacationer I have to recommend that you just do whatever the 23 year-old of your group wants to do, it is a tried-and-true principle that people of that age possess the best judgment on what fun activities may be. So that’s really all there is to say, in conclusion… you should listen to your son John…

Hey, Ion, that was my plan all along anyway, since he is going to be doing ALL of the driving. Of course I’ll only have to really listen to him if the batteries on my walkman give out, so better yet!
Unfortunately the 24-hour church of elvis is no more. It closed down a few years back.
The underground shanghai tunnels still remain however… if you like mingling with Chinese ghosts.

Wow! Haven’t checked this site in a while and I find out that Pie is the subject of choice! If I’d know that, I’d have been here a lot sooner. Daphne, if UltraMom make the pie, it would NOT be a good thing, either to look at or to taste. I’ve never understood the expression “easy as pie”, cause when I made pie, it takes me all day and everything in the kitchen is dirty by the time I finish. UltraDad is scaring me, cause he is on this lowcarb diet thing, and he came home with all these lowcarb baking mixes the other day. What he fails to realize is that they contain appox a jillion grams of fat. Sure hope he doesn’t think I’m acutally gonna use them to make pie!
In conclusion, From SNL Jack Handy’s DEEP THOUGHTS: “If you have a choice between regular heaven and pie heaven, choose pie heaven. Maybe its not real, but it if is, YUM YUM.”
